Bijection vs Retool
Retool is the standard way to build internal tools: drag components onto a page, connect them to the databases and APIs you already have, and ship an admin panel or an operations screen quickly. Around it sit Workflows for scheduled and triggered jobs, Retool Database, and Agents that act through your workflows and MCP tools. It runs in Retool’s cloud or self-hosted in your own environment, and more than 10,000 organizations use it, according to Retool.
Bijection works one layer lower. Instead of screens on top of each system, it gives you one model of the business, defined in TypeScript in your repository, in a transactional database that sends changes back to your systems with approvals and a record of every change. Applications and agents run on that model. Bijection is younger and smaller than Retool, and it has no drag-and-drop builder.
- What it is
- BijectionA transactional database and runtime for your ontology, operations and applications.
- RetoolA platform for building internal tools on your existing databases and APIs, with workflows, a hosted database and AI agents.
- Where you start
- BijectionA model of the business: objects, relationships and operations, defined once.
- RetoolA screen: components wired to queries against your existing databases and APIs.
- How you build
- BijectionTypeScript definitions in your Git repository, written by developers or coding agents. There are no visual builders yet.
- RetoolA visual builder, custom components in React and TypeScript, and JavaScript or Python in Workflows.
- Where the data lives
- BijectionIn one transactional database that syncs from your systems and writes back through declared operations.
- RetoolMostly where it already is: apps query your sources directly, and Retool Database adds a PostgreSQL store for smaller data.
- Changes to other systems
- BijectionDeclared operations. The intent is recorded before the call goes out, and an unanswered call stays unknown until it is reconciled.
- RetoolQueries write to each source directly, and Workflows run scheduled or webhook-triggered jobs across them.
- Where it runs
- BijectionA dedicated single-tenant environment per customer, operated by us. Not in your cloud account or on premises today.
- RetoolRetool Cloud, self-hosted on your own Kubernetes, or a single-tenant instance that Retool manages.
- AI
- BijectionModel calls are bounded steps with typed output. Agents reach data through scoped MCP endpoints and go through the same approvals as people.
- RetoolAgents built from instructions, a model and tools, with evals and versioned releases, and Assist to generate apps from a prompt.
- Maturity
- BijectionEarly. A small team and a focused core.
- RetoolFounded in 2017 and used by more than 10,000 organizations according to Retool, including DoorDash, Ramp and Brex.
Choose Retool if
- You need many admin screens over databases and APIs you already have, built quickly and without a new data layer.
- You must self-host on your own Kubernetes today.
- You want one place to host and govern internal apps, including ones generated by AI coding tools.
Choose Bijection if
- The same business rules are scattered across several admin panels, and you want them defined once.
- Changes cross several systems, and each one has to be approved, recorded and reconciled.
- You would rather define the business in code, reviewed and versioned like the rest of your software, and let coding agents write most of it.
